Our Story
Chiravan Svangvitaya was born in Thailand and came to the United States in pursuit of higher education, where she discovered her passion for culinary arts. She opened her first restaurant in 1985 on the south side of Chicago under the name "Thai Twins". The authentic flavor and fresh ingredients quickly garnered a reputation for excellence. In 1990, she relocated to San Diego and renamed the restaurant "Sala Thai", after her favorite restaurant in Bangkok. Her innovative dishes celebrate traditional recipes and flavors building a following that has carried the restaurant through 35 years serving San Diego.
Through three and a half decades of changes, recessions, Covid, and numerous hurdles, Sala Thai has remained a community favorite among locals, SDSU students, and greater San Diego residents. In celebration of the restaurant's 35th birthday, Chira has given the restaurant a fresh new look and atmosphere to deliver a memorable dining experience to compliment the already world-class cuisine! Whether customers are dining-in or having their favorite dishes delivered via multiple convenient food delivery apps, Sala Thai has and continues to provide Thai excellence in every bite!
